Here are best-practice washing instructions for a wool felt traditional sauna hat:

After each use:
Rinse or dab off sweat and moisture in cool or lukewarm water.  Let the hat air dry thoroughly before your next use (don’t leave it damp or in a sealed container).  
A light brushing or shaking out helps remove dust or debris.  

Hand wash only:

Fill a basin/sink with cold or very mild lukewarm water (avoid hot!!).  
Use a wool-specific detergent or gentle soap made for wool/felts.  
Gently submerge the hat, do not scrub vigorously, twist or wring.  
Rinse thoroughly in cool clean water until all detergent is removed.  
Press out excess water by gently rolling or pressing in a towel; reshape the hat while damp to its proper form.  
Let it air dry flat or hung loosely (but not stretched) in shade or indirect light; do not tumble-dry or use direct high heat.  

What to avoid:
Avoid machine washing. Aggitation and heat can shrink and distort wool felt.  
Avoid tumble drying or exposing to high heat (e.g., radiator, direct sunlight) that can shrink or warp the felt.  
Avoid fabric softeners or harsh detergents, which may damage wool fibres or the felt structure.  
Avoid wringing or twisting the hat after washing (this may deform the shape).
